How the 3x income rule works

Most Houston apartments ask that your gross monthly income is at least three times the monthly rent. Earning $4,500 a month before taxes usually qualifies you for rent up to $1,500.

  • Roommates and partners on the same lease can usually combine incomes.
  • Many renters feel comfortable keeping rent near 25% of gross income.
  • Credit, rental history and deposits also matter, and requirements vary by community.

Estimates only. Income requirements, credit thresholds, fees and specials vary by community and change often.
